Being a parent for a whopping 14 days, let me share one observation.
This little girl has done nothing that we should love her. She’s never said a nice word to us. She’s never thanked us for feeding her, bathing her, cleaning her. She’s never said sorry for causing her mom to throw up for 5 months, or now for keeping us awake at night, or for going to the bathroom on our brand new white comforter. She hasn’t laughed at any of my jokes. She’s never even said “I love you” back.
And yet….she has captured our hearts. We would do anything for this little girl. I think it has been 14 days since Shainu slept. The other day, I had to put my finger in her mouth, and I felt like my nail touched her gums. I ran to the bathroom, cut my nails down to the nub and cursed them to never grow back again!
I was reminded when Jesus said to the multitudes, “Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!“
When Shainu and I look at Hannah and consider the love that we have for this girl, and look at many of you and how you love your children, we’re amazed at how much more our Father in Heaven loves and gives to us. Behold the love of God, that we who have never done anything that He should love us, have become the children of God.
If we who are evil…then how much more our Father who is good…
