Are you really a Christian?

How do you know? How can you be sure? The world is filled with religious hypocrites, fakes, frauds, phonies, pretenders, shams, charlatans, etc, etc. In fact, Seven Mile Road could be filled with such folks. You could be one of them.

The Bible says that you could go a whole lifetime thinking that you’re good with God and find out in the end that you’re not. You could have the “appearance of godliness” but not have genuine spiritual life (2 Timothy 3:5). You can find yourself praying, prophesying, doing mighty religious works, and yet have Jesus say in the end, “I never knew you (Matthew 7:21-23).”  How do you know if you’re an authentic Christian or a counterfeit? Is there anyway to be sure?

There is.

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5:13)

John, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, now an elderly pastor, writes a letter to the churches under his care so that his “little children” (a term he uses frequently throughout the epistle) might have assurance that their faith is genuine. False teachers and heretics are troubling his flock and causing them to doubt whether they are true believers. And so John writes to comfort them of their genuine faith by exposing the counterfeit faith of their opponents. Through his letter, we get a clear vision for Authentic Christianity.

Seven Mile Road, over the next four months, read John’s letter carefully and examine yourself. Allow it to serve as a litmus test for your spiritual life. One of two things can happen. You will be assured by the fact that you really are a Christian or confronted and challenged by the reality that you are a counterfeit.

Either way, you are invited by 1 John to experience Authentic Christianity.
