Sharing Your Story

On Sunday, we heard the Apostle Paul tell his story through 1 Timothy 1:12-17 and Acts 26. We were reminded that there are many ways to proclaim the gospel. For example, you can do it by hitting someone up with a mouthful of Biblical theology. And that’s fine. Paul’s all about theology; just read Romans. But when Paul wants to communicate the gospel in the passages above, he does it by sharing his story. He describes a) his life before Jesus b) how Jesus came into his life and c) the difference that Jesus has made in His life. Your personal story of coming to faith is a powerful witness for Jesus. Here are some questions to consider in developing your own testimony of Jesus’ work in your life.

1. What was I like before I met Jesus?

  • Was there a dominant struggle in my life? (Anger, lust, pride, despair, self-righteousness, etc)
  • What have I leaned on and turned to instead of Jesus?

2. How did Jesus come into my life?

  • What did God use to open my eyes? How did it happen?
  • What did I come to understand about the gospel?

3. What difference has Jesus made in my life?

  • How is Jesus changing me? (My affections, my passions, my heart, my behavior, my goals, etc)
  • How do I continually need Jesus in my life?

May God give us opportunities to tell others of Jesus and His impact in our lives. People may listen, they may not. Proclaiming Jesus is our responsibility. Saving people is God’s. But take heart from what Paul says after he tells his story.

And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?” And Paul said, “Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am—except for these chains.” (Acts 26:28-29)
