Thanksgiving: A Weapon Against Worry

Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:5-7)

Today, you could have a thousand things to worry about.

But today, you also certainly have a thousand things to be thankful for.

Paul is saying to use the latter to help you deal with the former. Meaning, take time to gratefully remember God’s blessings in the past to help you fight against anxiety about the future. Don’t be anxious about anything, he says. Instead, pray about everything. And do so with thanksgiving, because remembering that God has been faithful in days gone by will give you confidence that He will be faithful in the days to come.

Then, anxiety will give way to peace. The kind of peace that surpasses human understanding because it is of God. And that peace will stand like a guard over your heart and mind keeping them in Christ and keeping anxiety and other intruders out.

Happy Thanksgiving.
