Seven Mile Road women, our second year of Women of the Word begins in a few weeks. Here is more information from Colleen McFadden & Shainu Thomas for anyone who may be interested in learning more.
Women of the Word exists to train women to teach women God’s Word. The teaching ministry of women ranges from Bible talks in large-group settings to sitting across the table with one other woman and working to understand a passage together. To that end, we envision three different kinds of participants in this track: 1) those who teach large groups, 2) those who disciple through one-on-one or small groups, and 3) those who simply want to participate as observers (with no teaching responsibilities). We know women desire to communicate God’s Word in a variety of venues. This track will equip you to understand the Bible and to communicate it effectively to others.
Meetings: We will meet approximately once per month from October 2016 to December 2017 (taking a break in the summer). Our first meeting will be October 8, 2016. Training meetings will be on Saturday mornings from 9am-12noon at the church. The meetings are meant to provide training in biblical exposition (understanding and communicating a biblical passage) and to be a time where we can practice teaching our fellow participants in order to receive feedback to grow in our ability to teach.
Reading: All participants will be expected to purchase and read Expositional Preaching by David Helm (Crossway 2014) prior to the start of the track. There will be additional readings throughout the year as well.
Teaching: Participants who desire to teach will have the opportunity to do so. This will look different for each participant including, but not limited to, taking the form of a Bible talk at a mini-retreat, teaching a children’s Sunday school lesson, writing and leading a small group Bible study, explaining the Gospel to someone outside the Christian faith. Each teaching session must be expositional in nature where the main point of the passage is the main point of the message. We will ask you to practice your teaching session in advance at a training meeting. If you participate as an observer, there will be no teaching responsibilities; however, we do encourage you to engage in the Bible study preparation for each meeting in order to gain the most from this track.
Prayerfully consider if you would like to be a part of this training. There is a healthy amount of work to do with meeting, reading, studying, preparing, and teaching. Pray asking God if this is how your time should be spent over the next several months. If you participated in the 2015/2016 WOW track, you are welcome to participate again.
Send an email to Colleen McFadden (email@example.com) by October 2, 2016, if you would like to participate or with any questions. Please include your desired area of participation: 1) large group teaching, 2) discipleship through one-on-one or small groups, or 3) observation with no teaching.
Thanks and we are eager to grow together as students and teachers of God’s Word!
