Philly has felt a bit different this week. People are opening doors for me, smiling and asking how I’m doing, and are just generally kinder. What has happened to cause such a strange phenomenon? Well, of course, our beloved Eagles are in the Super Bowl after a 13-year hiatus and our city couldn’t be more excited! It feels surreal and I couldn’t be prouder to be a Philadelphian!
As we ride this green wave of excitement, here are two quick thoughts we want you to consider heading into Super Bowl LII:
- Invite People to Watch. Last Sunday we preached on ‘Community‘ and some of the ways we get to live out our lives together as Christians. This coming Sunday we’ll be preaching on ‘Mission‘ and engaging with those outside of the church. The Super Bowl would be a wonderful opportunity to connect with people both inside and outside of the Christian community. We briefly considered hosting a watching party at the church building, but the thought of 100 screaming kids and questionable Wi-Fi connection gave us anxiety. So instead, whether you are watching at your home or going somewhere else, would you think about folks you can be watching with? Whether it’s people in your GCM or at SMR, neighbors, or someone you’ve wanted an excuse to reach out to, be thoughtful about including people in your Super Bowl festivities. Consider the welcome you receive into God’s family, at his table, and so consider inviting others to yours.
- Enjoy the Super Bowl. If the preacher of Ecclesiastes has taught us anything last year, it has been that God has given us wonderful moments like this to thoroughly enjoy life. So enjoy the gifts of friendship, food, and drink during the Super Bowl. Laugh together. High-five one another. Celebrate this unbelievable moment for our city together. Enjoy this moment without guilt, knowing that through it you are glorifying God.
I’ll end on this note. E-A-G-L-E-S!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ?
