We announced on Sunday that Phyllis Smith, a member of St. Mark’s Church, passed away over the weekend. Phyllis was 91 and loved Jesus. She also loved Seven Mile Road. From the moment we connected with St. Mark’s, Phyllis had been a fan and a friend. Every Sunday she would walk slowly to the front of the church connected to the oxygen tank that helped her breathe. She’d sit on the first pew and would sing with passion.  She would smile at me as I climbed into the pulpit and listen carefully to every word that I preached. She was old enough to be my grandmother and yet she’d respectfully address me as Pastor. At the end of the service, she would thank me for my sermon – not the generic kind of thank you – but with details as to what she liked.  At the back of the church, we would talk about Jesus together. She spoke well of Seven Mile Road and was excited about what we were doing for her Lord.

A few weeks back, she had made plans with Betty, another member of St. Mark’s Church who now worships with us, to go out for lunch in April. She asked Betty if she would pick her up at 9:30. Betty was more than happy to do so, but asked why so early for a lunch date. Phyllis replied, “Then we can go to church and I can hear Reverend Thomas preach.” Phyllis will gather now with a better assembly (Heb. 12:22-23). We mourn her death. We celebrate her life. We look forward to seeing her again with Jesus.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Seven Mile Road, all those who are able are invited to attend the funeral service for Phyllis this Friday.
