I’ve had a hard time watching football since December 14. It’s like while the rest of the nation continued following their favorite teams on the road to the big game, I decided to take the nearest exit off the freeway. I was done. As Eagles fans, we usually are around this time of the year. And yet, as disappointed and angry as we may be, there’s no question as to what we’ll be doing this weekend. Along with 1/3 of America, we’ll be glued to our televisions watching the NFL’s top QBs fight for the Lombardi (a trophy that our city will possibly never see… I’m not bitter… really).
Though this game ultimately has no value for Philadelphians, I want to encourage you to not waste the Super Bowl. Seven Mile Road, on February 1, you have an opportunity to live out your faith in real practical ways. Here are some ideas on how:
- Pursue others – I imagine you have at least 1 person in your life who you’ve been meaning to get to know better or reengage. Take a moment right now to call, email, or text them and plan something for Sunday.
- Serve others – Host a party at your home or coordinate a get together with your GCM. Have great food, a great selection of drinks, and go all out.
- Love “others” – Don’t just invite the people you normally would. What if you took a chance to love those who are different than you or those you even find hard to love?
- Engage others – It’ll be a great game, no doubt. But be certain to engage people as much as you do football. You have a great opportunity to learn their story and go deeper in friendship. Don’t miss that.
- Pray for others– Ask the Lord to help you make this Superbowl meaningful. Ask him to make Sunday night so much more than just about football.
So sure, the only bird playing this Sunday will be a sea hawk (what a pathetic bird!), but remember not to waste a single moment of the Super Bowl. Pursue, serve, love, engage and pray for others like your Savior did for you.
